How to Cook Simmered Beans with Onions and Ham
People have been eating beans from times immemorial. They are very wholesome, being a good source of easily digestible proteins and fiber. It’s better to salt the beans at the end of cooking when they are already soft because salt makes their skin harder. We used frozen green beans for this recipe, they cook very quickly.
Ingredients for Simmered Beans with Onions and Ham
- 1.1 lb beans
- 0.4 lb Prosciutto ham
- 3 onions
- olive oil, salt
Cooking Instructions
- Cut onions into very small cubes.
- Pour olive oil into a saucepan or a pan with a thick bottom. Roast the onions in olive oil until slightly brown.
- Add finely chopped ham.
- In about 2 minutes add the beans and pour some water to cover the beans by about 0.4 inches.
- Simmer the beans for about 25 minutes over low heat. Try them and if the beans are soft salt them and continue simmering for another 10-15 minutes. Serve the beans hot.
