Green Tea Is Healthier with Lemon
A new research of the health properties of green tea showed that it is much healthier to drink tea with citrus juice, in particular with lemon juice. The research was financed by the US National Institute of Health. The results of the study showed that the addition of juice with high C vitamin content into green tea increased the amount of catechin (a strong antioxidant) and ensured its better absorption.
Doctor Ferruzzi, lead researcher, explained that the main problem lies with catechins which are relatively instable without acid environment. Most of them are not absorbed completely. Lemon helps preserve and absorb 80 % of catechins. At this absorption level (which exceeds the common absorption level by five times) catechins protect the body from blood-strokes, heart attacks and cancer growth much more effectively. He added that it also relates to black tea. Many people prefer to drink black tea flavored with lemon. Though it is already known that it is not so rich in catechins as green tea.
