Fried Pumpkin Flowers
The flowers of zucchini and pumpkin are traditionally used in Italian cuisine. Sometimes flowers are prepared stuffed with something like mozzarella, anchovy or shrimps. But customarily they fry flowers in oil having dipped them in batter which is called “pastella” in Italian. Here’s the simplest recipe for preparing flowers.
Ingredient for Fried Pumpkin Flowers
- 15-20 pumpkin flowers
- 1 glass flour
- salt, mineral water, oil for frying
Recipe for Fried Pumpkin Flowers
- Mix salt into flour and knead the dough for pastella, adding carbonated mineral water gradually. The dough should be not very thick nor very thin. It should coat the flowers evenly when you dip them.
- Pour oil into a thick-bottomed frying pan and heat it up. Oil should be about an inch and half deep, because flowers are supposed to float in it.
- Remove the stems off the flowers. Dip each bud into the dough and fry 2-3 at a time until golden.
