Oregano or origano, is a popular spice in Italy. It is added to salads, sauces for pasta, it goes for sprinkling over meat and fish; besides, it is an invariable addition to the classical Margarita pizza.
A recent discovery has been made by scientists from Long Island University – their research revealed that oregano can keep down cancer. It is possible owing to carvacrol, a substance abounding in oregano.
It was already known that carvacrol possesses antibacterial properties, and now it is scientifically proved that this organic substance can cause apoptosis of malignant cells – that means they die out.
By the way, another spice that has similar properties is curcuma, an ingredient in curry.
